January 26, 1929-January 24, 2025
Coy Brack, a kind-hearted soul known for his warm smile and funny stories, passed away peacefully at the age of 95 on January 24, 2025, 2 days short of his 96th birthday at Harbor Hospital House in Beaumont, Texas. Born on January 26, 1929, in Burkeville, TX, Coy was one of nine children in a family that prized hard work, integrity, and faith in God. He resided in Groves, TX, for over 65 years in the home that he and his wife built with their own hands.
Coy is preceded in death by his parents, Johnny Robert Brack and Selma Estella Miller, and his siblings, Beatrice, Myrtle Lee, Angie, John Robert, Ois, Lawrence, LC, and Venice. Coy is survived by his wife of 70+ years, Norene Anabel Fillyaw, and his 3 sons, Ron, Dal (Debbie Rutledge), and Marty (Debbie Hogan). The grandchildren include Taylor (Tyne) Brack, Tanner (Rebekah) Brack, Tori Haas (Andrew), Shay (Courtney Duncan) Brack, Dillon (Monica) Brack, Gage (Jessica) Weldon, Cole (Camille) Weldon, Logan (Courtney) Brack, Reagan Beers (Brandon) and a host of great grand kids.
Shortly after graduating from Burkeville High School, Coy joined the Army honorably serving his country in the Korean War, an experience that contributed significantly to developing discipline and integrity in his character. He was stationed in Europe where he spent a significant amount of time in Germany. His service reflects a dedication to his country that left an enduring impact on his family and friends.
After, returning home, Coy began work at the Texas Company (Texaco Refinery) in 1949 displaying commendable skills and unwavering work ethic for 35 years as an insulator until his retirement in 1984. He was a dedicated employee and still carried his Texaco ID card from 1954 in his wallet, some 71 years later. His career was a testament to his commitment and craftsmanship, embodying values that resonated deeply with those who had the pleasure of knowing him. Coy was known as a fair, kind man who had many friends and was highly respected. His goal was to be retired for as long as he was employed by Texaco. He achieved that milestone when he reached 90 years of age. Retirement did not slow Coy down; instead, it gave him the opportunity to serve others, refurbish street-side discoveries, and tend to his garden which he maintained for decades.
Coy Married the love of his life, Norene Anabel Fillyaw, of Newton, Texas on June 5, 1954, and celebrated over 70 1/2 years of marriage. The shared a deep love for each other that provided a foundation for a long marriage. They greeted each other every day in the morning and said good night every evening with a hug and kiss. They settled in Groves, Texas raising three boys, and Coy never missed a chance to show them support by coaching their teams, attending school events, and teaching them the value of hard work and service.
Coy was known for his love of gardening and could often be seen working in his trademark overalls or coveralls. He found great joy in showing off his crop to anyone who came by for a visit, and for sharing his crop with those who loved fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, greens, potatoes and peppers. Coy was a faithful member of Central Baptist Church and Grace Baptist Church for over 60 years. He spent a significant amount of time helping to build the Central Baptist Church building. He was well known for his humorous and adventurous stories at the annual church Thanksgiving dinner!
